CloudMagic Search is shutting down

Update 2 [6th Mar, 00:30 PST]: All user data and credentials have been permanently deleted.

Update 1 [12th Feb, 21:00 PST]: CloudMagic Search has been shutdown. We have started deleting your data and credentials.

We will be drawing the curtains on CloudMagic Search on February 10th. Thank you for being a valuable user thus far, we’re truly grateful. It’s been a great journey exploring the personal data search category, but we’ve come to realize that we need to focus solely on CloudMagic Mail. Here’s the lowdown:

Why are we shutting down CloudMagic Search?

We set off to build universal search for personal data – a service using which one could find anything quickly from all their emails, files, contacts and calendars. We launched in 2012 and 5 star ratings poured in across all App Stores, users just loved it.

We were definitely helping users find their content across all services, but the usage analytics told us a lot more than just that.

Usage logs suggested that 80% of our users were using CloudMagic solely to search their mailboxes. Inspite of all email services providing in-app search, users greatly preferred CloudMagic for searching through their email. This, along with the numerous feature requests for marking an email read, deleting an email, replying, etc. (core emailing features) told us that users were actually looking for an email app with CloudMagic search built in, as opposed to a service that searches through all personal data.

We then looked deeper into the world of email and realized we’d hit on a far more widespread problem. That’s what we solved with the launch of CloudMagic Mail, in the fall of 2013.

With the tremendous response we are getting for CloudMagic Mail, we’ve reached a point when we have to focus on the one product that we want to do really really well. Hence, the decision to shut down CloudMagic Search.

What will happen to the user data?

All indexed data along with the user account credentials and authorization will be permanently deleted from our servers on the day of shutdown, Feb 10th.

As a user, are there any similar options for me?

If you were using CloudMagic Search primarily for searching through your mailboxes, we’d suggest you give CloudMagic Mail a spin – It’s a full featured email app with the same lightning fast email search. Download links: iPhone/iPad | Android. If you were using CloudMagic Search for searching through files, contacts or your calendar, we don’t really have an option for you right now.

Once again, thank you to all our users. We’re also grateful to all those journalists who reviewed CloudMagic and spread the word. We’re more excited than ever about CloudMagic Mail and there’s lot’s of amazing stuff coming your way soon!

Cheers,
CloudMagic Team

Thanks for the pointer to xen.do. I will give it a try.

Wow, weeping for my workflow. What a huge let down. I am definitely concerned about using other products from CloudMagic. Shutting down services with no notice or alternative solution recommendations is crappy. I'll go scan my credit card statements now for the refund I am due. This was hand's down one of my favorite paid services. So disappointing.

I join the disappointed group that the CloudMagic web-based search has gone away. I use the Chrome plugin as my primary interface into CloudMagic.

Based on the test I did tonight, removing the web/chrome plugin functionality is totally unnecessary and with a few clicks we could all have these features back!

I loaded the CloudMagic mobile app on my iPad tonight to give your App a test. The first thing I found is that you already know me and all my accounts. This made setting up the mobile app easier. Second it appears that all of my data is still indexed on your servers. There is no way you could have downloaded and indexed 2G of data from one of my 6 accounts in the 2 mins it took me to re-enable the login and run my search tests (described below). Maybe you have a grace period - but this isn't my main point. (nor the fact that I have 6 active email accounts in your app when your description says only 5 are allowed).

My point is I ran the following test to find out where:

1) the years of emails I have accumulated are being kept

2) the search actually happens.

I did a search that revealed several emails from 4 years ago. Very quick indeed, just like I would expect. Then I clicked on one of the emails, came up fast, but not instant like I would expect if it was stored locally. I then put my iPad into airplane mode. Back in Cloudmagic App I clicked on a previously unopened email (still the same search results list from prior to airplane mode) which didn't display at all.

I then cleared the search, displayed a couple of emails from one of my accounts and then performed the search again. This time there were no results from the search.

AHA! You are keeping my emails and the index on your servers! This is fantastic news!

1) I don't want years of email chewing up space on my iPad

2) Since we now know that the mobile app is using the same index you created for us old time users on your servers, you can very easily reenable the web and browser plugin interfaces.

With 99% of my searching via the web (chrome plugin), this is an awesome "additional" feature to your Mobile App.

I understand the need to focus on email requiring the removal of support for non-mail applications. Fine. Just give us back web browser and web plugin access (aka chrome plugin) for searching. (although it seems to me that Evernote is very similar to another email account so should be simple to keep).

I am sure you made this change so you could be a "Mobile App" company which is worth more than a "Web App" company. I am ok with that.... Please give us back the tool we all came to love on the platform that is most useful to us.

Everyone who reads this...if you agree POST. That way CloudMagic's Product Management will see that it is still useful to have web access for searching with the Mobile App.

While I (hopefully) have your attention, adding one or both of these feature to your Mobile App would definately lock me in.

1) In Settings/per email box: Automatically display images On/Off - I hate that all mobile email clients don't have this option.

2) On each email: Display Images? with a second option: Display Images from this contact? (see PostBox's implementation)

This would be awesome and seems like it would be a second unique value as I haven't been able to find any other mobile app that supports this. I don't always want to see the pictures and would certainly help reduce the amount of data I use on my cellular plan!

Horrible news :( , I don't want another mail client, I want my smart and grouped search of CloudMagic Pro... bad news for me.

Hey guys try out Xen.Do (https://xen.do/) as a replacement for cross-platform search.  I've been using for a few days and I think it will be good.  They're working on an Android app now.  Have a Chrome extension.  I'm happy using Xen.Do for search and leaving CloudMagic email app for others - certainly don't need it.

Also, why is my data still active in CloudMagic search when they said all data is deleted end of day yesterday?  I hope they will truly be deleting all data.

To CloudMagic: You guys should let your 20% users know about the existence of Xen.Do!

I was relying in this but the reason they shut it down I believe is that the Evernote search provides less a valuable marketing research information than email which is social and represents habits and connections rate than static information and notes. From business perspective, 80/20 rile makes sense. I'm not surprised but I am disappointed of course.

Very disappointing. Being able to search ALL of my data stores was so useful. Now...?

Sadly...this is huge loss. The cool thing about CM was it fit with my strategy of using the best cloud based tools to store a particular set of data and then use CM to quickly (astonishly so) find what I was looking for. The email app is cool but not revolutionary...while I wish you the best of luck, that app is not enough of an enhancement to have me switch.

Lame.

I am one of the 20% of your users who loves using your wonderful service to search all of his personal data, including not only email but also Dropbox, contacts and calendar events, and I would have happily paid a yearly or monthly fee to continue using this service.

If it's only going to be email now, I might as well just use my email service's built-in search facility. Which is exactly what I'll be doing.

Bye-bye CloudMagic. It's been nice knowing you.

This is (err, was) the single most useful service I pay for. Like others, I rely on CloudMagic for universal search across several Google accounts, Exchange, Dropbox, and Evernote. I don't need another email client. I was a paying customer because you offer a service that -- as others have noted -- has no equal. How hard can it be to keep your few connectors up-to-date and working? How expensive is it to keep a few servers running? You've already done the tremendous effort to build the infrastructure, write great apps, and build a paying userbase...and you're killing it. It's like you don't want our money.

You are moving out of a blue ocean market for consumer-focused universal search into a very crowded marketplace for email clients, where your chief competitor is free and built-in to all smartphones. So you're going to go from taking $6/mo from me to taking, what, $10 once from a few people who dislike iOS Mail and purchase the app? Or are you thinking of charging a subscription for an email client? On the Mac desktop, you can't hope to compete with Airmail (which is cheap and awesome). On iOS, there's a glut of of cheap email clients, soon to be joined by Airmail for iOS.

Perhaps this is all the result of an error in data interpretation. That 20% who connected non-email services...what %age of your paying users do they represent?

Makes me wonder if your goal is to end up the subject of a Harvard Business School case study on "How Not to Pivot."

Already using Boxer. I don't need another email client. You will find that this venture will not be a successful one. I am waiting for the day when your company folds.

tomasmittelbach

Why is it then faced with statistics, every innovative idea is abandoned? Uh, mail client, sure there are things to improve but there are dozens.

"We set off to build universal search for personal data ..... emails, files, contacts and calendars"... there are apps for mobile, webapp, extensions for browsers. You´ve done it and quite well indeed.

"If you were using CloudMagic Search for searching through files, contacts or your calendar, we don’t really have an option for you right now" ... good reason to shut it down really
"If you were using CloudMagic Search primarily for searching through your mailboxes"... we have something for (only) Android and iPhone/Pad (for now)

I hate these types of posts, I´d love a "not a judgy-person, read the real reason" button. Was it not generating income? Did it not seem worth it for a small user base? Was it too labour intensive and you want to move on?

PS: I get that not everybody is so savvy or has the option to forward their emails to one inbox, I for one use one Gmail for 5 inboxes, it has filters that mark incoming emails with colours and tags showing the address, identities that reply automatically from the address the original email where the message was delivered... Though CloudMagic search is better than Googles search still.

Just echoing the other comments... Cloudmagic search has been brilliant for searching across cloud storage. I'm grateful for that, but gutted it's shutting down. I would have thought that your unique identifier as a content search engine was the thing that drew those 80% email only folk in the first place. Your email app seems fine but I prefer mailbox for my gmail and it has search so I won't be using your new app. I hope this move doesn't work out badly for you!

So first they dropped social network search - which we paid for. Now this.

It's a free country, but I'd never invest energy or my workflow in using a tool from this company again.

WHAT CAN I DO for you NOT shutdown this program. It is really MAGIC and it is true there is no other that can we use as a sustitute.

So I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND: you are the only one, the product is really good and you shutdown!!!!

I expect you will continue in the next future.

Thank you for the time we could use it.

Clearly it's your decision, as it's your service to do with as you wish.

I, as many others have stated, have no intention of using a different email app. I use Google Apps in a Chrome App on Desktop, and Gmail on Android (with occasional use of Boomerang for Gmail on Android). Unless you can fully replicate ALL functionality of the native Gmail app, and then add your search functionality ... and then make sure you are actively keeping up with new features added to the native Gmail app ... I will have no use for your mail app.

Bottom line: Your search is a nice add-on to the mail service we use. It's not that important that we'll abandon the rest of what we use to follow you. Sorry.

Hello Chirag,

In looking over the comments of the dedicated users of CloudMagic Search (and adding in the voices of the lurking), I believe we are saying we find CM a wonderful and essential part of our everyday experience. Whether or not you bring CMS back to life is up to your company; however, I personally am less likely to use CloudMagic Mail given this sudden cessation of a perfectly lovely app.

I read in your profile that you are a "marketer" at CloudMagic. I would like to politely suggest that your tone be more "market-friendly" and less draconian. In the least, the abrupt manner does not entice me to try CMM despite my initial misgivings.

CLOUDMAGIC SEARCH is outstanding, fast, diffrent. How can take such a decition!!!!

I would be wiling to PAY a yearly fee to use it. I have pay a look at cloudmagic Mail. Nothing really interesting. It is really a pitty.

ON the other hand, how could be trust you are NOT going to shutdown the Mail App in the next future?

Il Gobb
Il Gobb

That's awful, I'll terribly miss the ability to read an email and then look for a GDrive document therein referred, or another one in Dropbox, and a useful related note in Evernote... you're killing my productivity here, even if I understand your position. Sigh >__<
No way to keep it up with limited support/no updates?

rayhawkclan

Too bad.  I used your universal search daily for Google drive, evermore and dropbox.  Switched to xen.do when I heard about yet another email app instead of the service I signed up for and was willing to pay a subscription fee for.  Those losing out on cloudmagic could give xen.do some support.  The developer reached out to me after I commented in the Google apps store.  He was very interested in learning why we used cloudmagic and what we need or want xen.do to do for us.  I have no need for another email app so its goodbye Cloudmsgic.  Sorry...I am in that 20% crowd.

WHAAAAATTTT..... NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Someone's been hitting the pipe, if they think shutting down universal search to focus solely on email search is a better discussion. This will ruin my work flow!

If you would keep cloudmagic search available, (supported, and expanding data sources) I would be willing to pay a yearly fee to use it - can anyone else chime in and second me on this?

*****Your unique differentiator was universal search across content platforms****

Cross email search is dumb, as google already offers it.

We Users have no use or patience for another email client.

Bad assumption, guys - there's nothing special about you anymore.

So what happens to our paid subscriptions?

Ghan

Why can't you monetize your service by inserting apps in the search results? I, for one, wouldn't mind. Just shut the entire thing down and walk away from a dedicated user base? Surely you jest?!

Ghan
Ghan

Whaaaat??!!! Come ON guys! I have no intention at all of switching to any email app on my android, but have been using CloudMagic in my Gmail account since it first came out. Beats google search hands down, for email. If you're going to focus on one product, then by all means focus on the one that truly makes a difference! Universal search is fantastic! What a regrettable decision! There are endless mail apps for mobile, but desktop universal search? As you stated yourselves, there are no options available now! Again, very regrettable decision.

I remember @viticci also used cloudmagic, now that it's gone and has no replacement whatsoever, can I call it a sad day for productivity?

JohnFleming1

Argh, I use Gmail, Google Apps, docs, drive, Evernote, Facebook messages, and Google voice (with all sms messages automatically archived in my gmail) and so this search function across all my services was awesome. Then they shut down the twitter and Facebook portion. Small loss, considering I changed jobs and fb msgs aren't as important anymore. But now shutting down the rest? That's terrible. Why be a one trick Pony? Besides, email isn't dying in the business world anytime soon, but teenagers sure don't use email much at all for personal connections (they use texting, snapchat, Instagram, etc) and they are getting away from mom and dad who can watch them on Facebook. This change is short sighted and the reason you can't suggest an alternative is because there are none and this all I'm one search across all your accounts is ahead of its time! Don't end it, please!

No!! I use CloudMagic Search regularly...and apparently 20% of your other users (I'm guessing that's a lot of people). There isn't another solution that even closely matches up, I've tried looking in a bunch of places. Could you guys leave it running with discontinued support, or perhaps release it in a way that someone could create a fork?

@rajbht  Yes, you should watch for refund in your card statement. Our logs say that an amount of $14.97 has been refunded to your account.

@memymomadia  Can you please send your CloudMagic username to hello@cloudmagic.com? We will let you know the status of refund.

Chirag N R
Chirag N R moderator

@markeclinger  Yes, CloudMagic Search and CloudMagic Mail share the same infrastructure. We also made both products share the same login, so that getting started for old users with CloudMagic Mail is a breeze. After all, the state-of-the-art search is available in CloudMagic Mail. We had earlier sent out emailers to try CloudMagic Mail.

And regarding 6 accounts, we have let CloudMagic Search users keep all their accounts while they move to CloudMagic Mail. We didn't want the old users to face any friction while moving to the new app.

BTW, we are in the process of deleting data & credentials of CloudMagic Search users who hadn't tried CloudMagic Mail. Once that is complete, CloudMagic Mail will not recognize old users if they hadn't tried it before.

I'm glad that you liked CloudMagic Mail. We have the features requested by you in the wishlist.
